One of the most versatile and useful plants in the world is the bamboo plant. The bamboo plant grows at incredible rate of up to 2″/hr. At this rate, this makes the bamboo plant is the fastest growing plant in the world. There have been reported cases in which bamboo plants have had a growth rate, of up to 4 meter per day.

Many people think that bamboo plants are trees, but they are not trees, if fact they are evergreen grass. These grasses fall into 91 different genre, with over 1,000 specific plants currently known. As different species can be used for different things, this variety helps to make certain of the lasting survival of this plant.

This astonishing growing rate makes bamboo plants invaluable in eastern regions such as India, China and Japan, as the bamboo plants can be used as food, wood and fuel. The fast growing rate makes this renewable resource a cornerstone of those societies. As bamboo, when properly treated, can be extremely durable and long lasting, it provides an easy solution to many problems.

One of the well known uses of bamboo plants is their cultivation as wood. In construction, bamboo can create imposing, stable scaffoldings, provide a base wood over slower growing trees, and provide ornamental value to both the interior and exterior of a house. Other uses of bamboo wood include tools such as durable cutting boards, chop sticks, tables and other pieces of furniture as well as pieces for popular games such as go. Bamboo plants are also very popular in outdoor landscaping..

When bamboo plants are just sprouting, the shoots can be consumed from many different varieties. However, not all types of bamboo shoots should be consumed. {For example, several species like the giant bamboo}~As an example, the giant bamboo contains cyanide within the shoots. Cyanide can be deadly to people.

Many types of animals thrive by consuming bamboo. Most notably is the panda, which only lives on bamboo stalks and leaves.

Even with all of contemporary uses of bamboo, bamboo plants do not come without faults. Still unknown why, bamboo plants, tend to have mass flowering and fruiting seasons. Most notably in the Bay of Bengal, where the bamboo plants bloom once every 30 to 35 years. This mass blooming and fruiting causes devastating consequences to human populations surrounding the bloom. As the fruit ripens, rats swarm. As the rats gather in mass, they carry disease with them and cause famine. This can cause many human deaths, as there is little that can be done to stop the fruiting once it has begun. There is little that can be done, as, they cannot be simply destroyed to prevent the rat swarms.

Bamboo is a hardy plant and can thrive in many regions across the world. They are most commonly found in East Asia, although they can thrive in sub-Saharan Africa, North and South America. Bamboo does not grow in Europe, North Africa, western Asia, Canada and Antarctica.

Successful vegetable gardening involves far more than just popping a few seeds into the ground and waiting for a tomato to appear. I’ll briefly cover the basics of vegetable garden design, but you might also want to get some gardening books.

Planning your garden is one of the most important parts of vegetable gardening, and it’s quite simple. Whether it’s a vegetable garden, a flowerbed, indoor houseplants, or some combination, successful gardening requires planning, patience, and a little detective work. Whatever you do, do not choose garden soil, no matter how rich it might be, for indoor vegetable gardening! No matter what gardening zone your garden is located in there are catalogues with myriad variety of vegetables. Use these vegetable gardening tips to prepare your garden and keep your home full of fresh vegetables. Preparing your garden soil for planting is the most physically demanding part of vegetable gardening and may also be the most important part.

The patios and balconies of apartment buildings and condominiums often have good exposure for container vegetable gardening. Container gardening makes it possible to position the vegetables in areas where they can receive the best possible growing conditions. Container gardening can provide you with fresh vegetables as well as recreation and exercise. Although vegetable production will be limited by the number and the size of the containers, this form of gardening can be rewarding. Soilless mixes such as a peat-lite mix are generally too light for container vegetable gardening, since they usually will not support plant roots sufficiently. MEDIA A fairly lightweight potting mix is needed for container vegetable gardening. Soil Conditions The right type of soil for the right type of plant is key to successful vegetable gardening. Clay and sandy soils must be modified for successful vegetable gardening. Proper fertilization is another important key to successful vegetable gardening.

Buy seeds, seed starting kits and gardening supplies for vegetable gardens. If you are new to gardening, starting vegetables from seed may be too huge an undertaking, instead purchase plants. Practice crop rotation in your vegetable gardening by planting tomatoes and other vegetables in a different spot every year. Mulches can be used effectively in all types of gardening situations from vegetable gardens to flower gardens and even around trees and shrubs. I know an eyebrow or two might be raised at the suggestion of indoor vegetable gardening, but it can be done, within limits.

Added to the pleasure of gardening will be satisfaction derived from relishing vegetables freshly picked from your very own plot. Learning is a process, vegetable gardening needs time. As in so many other pursuits, so it is in the art of vegetable gardening: practice does make perfect.

The ancient Muslim poet, jurist, and theologian, Jalal ad-Din Muhammad Rumi, may not have stumbled madly upon the very first rose back in 13th century Persia but he certainly immortalized it poignantly in his writing.

Roses are believed to have originated in ancient Persia but their cultivation quickly spread across the Northern Hemisphere, first from China to Europe and finally to North America. Rose enthusiasts throughout time and geography have helped to spread the cultivation and the adoration of this lovely flowers to the point that, today, there are more than 20,000 varieties available.

They run the gamut of the color spectrum. They come in every color, including the elusive blue and black ones that have dogged rose breeders for ages. Every shade of every color is represented, too, with many rose blossoms sporting multiple colors or shades. These enchanting plants have been bred to grow straight and tall or trail over slopes and fences. Some roses grow close to the ground while others become bushy. Many rosebushes bloom once in the spring or summer, others bloom again in the fall, and others still bloom from early spring until winter.

Diversity aside, a few rose gardening tips might improve your rose-growing success.

Planting is the first step to consider when compiling a list of rose gardening tips. Folklore tells us to plant flowering plants when the moon is in a waxing phase. Indeed all plants that produce their most desirable growth above ground are said to be best planted during the time the moon is growing into its biggest, most visible, phase. (In turn, plant carrots, potatoes, and other plants where underground action is most desirable when the moon is waning, or becoming less visible.)

Trim your hair, visit your barber, or comb your dog the day before planting your roses. This, another of folklore rose gardening tips, ensures you have a bit of hair to mix in with the soil in which you plant your roses. Decomposing hair is said to provide excellent fertilizer for thriving roses.

Sunshine is one of the most important rose gardening tips. Make sure to plant your roses, always during their dormant phase, in a spot where they can get at lease six hours of full sun every day. These tips include trees, too. Keep your roses away from tree roots, especially deciduous trees, or they will divert the nutrients of the soil from your hungry roses

These days, so many tools are available to the home gardener, whether at your local garden center, superstore or an infomercial touting the benefits of their most recent garden invention. You could spend hundreds of dollars on all types of gardening gadgets, but when it comes right down to it, there are only a few true necessities in rose gardening.

Because we all know that the old saying ‘every rose has its thorn’ is very true, your first order of business in stocking your rose gardening tool box will be a pair of very good gloves. A rose garden is no place for cute, cotton gloves that will only keep your fingers clean. You should select heavy, leather gloves with a cuff so that your hands will be protected especially while pruning your rose plants. Some roses even have tricky, tiny thorns along their stem and if your hands are unprotected, these will go into your skin like tiny, splinters as you grasp the stems to cut back growth.

Onto the subject of pruning, you will want to select a good set of pruning shears. Shears generally fall into two categories, only one of which should be used in rose gardening. The first type, the anvil pruner, has blades that meet on top of each other and if used on your roses, will squash the stems and canes. The preferred type of pruning shear is the bypass pruner, whose blades pass each other as they cut the stems, as would a pair of scissors. These protect the stems and canes of your roses as you are cutting back the plants. Select a pair that has a comfortable grip and is a good fit for the size of your hand, as you will be using these frequently in your rose gardening. You should also consider the locking device on the shears, especially if you have young children.

The next tools are so simple and yet so necessary in rose gardening: a rake, a spade and a shovel. Choose a garden rake with sharp, closely spaced metal tines rather than a leaf rake with widely spaced tines. This will help you level soil for your rose beds. A hand held spade will be indispensable for moving soil around your plants. You should also choose a long handled shovel for planting, selecting for size and comfort of use because, again, this is a tool you will be using over and over in your rose garden.

The final set of tools, to add to your collection, are involved in the watering and care of your plants. You will need a watering system and the long handled garden wand sprayer that attaches to a hose is a great choice. These wands make watering the roots of your plants a breeze, and help to reach those tricky hanging baskets as well. For feeding and applying pesticides, a pressure sprayer that also attaches to your garden hose will prove invaluable. Mixing and applying will be so simple with just the addition of this tool.

Once your tool collection is complete, you will be on your way to successful rose gardening, armed with all the necessities. Just these basics are enough to get you started in rose gardening or to keep up with the rose garden you are already enjoying.

Herb gardening is becoming more and more popular every day and for good reason. Herbs have practical value, serve a purpose and with herb gardening, you can actually get to use your plants. When most people think of herb gardening, they automatically think of cooking, but herbs are also grown for their pleasant aromas and their beauty.

One important part of herb gardening, is drying the herbs, for use during the winter months, especially if you plan on cooking with them. First, the tops of leafy herbs have to be cut, washed, and hung up, for the water to evaporate. Then, tie the stems together and hang them up in a paper bag, to dry properly. After two, to three weeks, they can be removed. Crumble the leaves, dry them out in the oven and store in a glass jar.

One of the most common herbs gown in herb gardening, is Basil. ‘Dark Opal’ and regular Green Basil, are beautiful additions to any garden and are often used as decoration. Dark Opal has light pink flowers and dark red leaves. Basil isn’t just used for its looks, it is used for extra flavour in tomato juices and pastes.

Chives are very petite looking and resemble a blade of grass. They are much stronger than they look however and will grow well, through a drought. Their toughness and sturdiness makes Chives a perfect plant, for herb gardening, especially if the gardener doesn?t want plants that require a lot of hassle. Chives are good when used in salads, egg dishes and many different sauces.

Mint is also very simple to grow and is good to use in mint jelly, mint juleps, lemonade and any other kind of fruity drink. Mint is also good in herb gardening, for its unique minty smell. Two herbs that appear in nearly everyone?s herb garden, are Thyme and Sage. Both of these herb gardening favourites, are used for flavouring soups, chicken, turkey, pork and other sausages. Sage is also grown sometimes, for its beautiful blue spiked flowers.

Lavender is probably the best smelling herb, in all of herb gardening and is often used in candles, as a perfume scent and to improve the smell in linen chests. The light purple flowers smell absolutely lovely.

Other types of herbs often grown in herb gardening, include Borage (used in salads), Chervil (used in egg dishes), sweet Marjoram (flavours lamb, fish, salad, and soup), Sesame (flavours crackers, cookies and bread) and Dill (flavours meats and used in pickles). Herb gardening allows gardeners to use herbs from their own garden, for cooking, looks and smell. Herb gardening will produce much fresher herbs, with more flavour than store-bought herbs and are a lot cheaper.
