The Rhododendron Haaga, 'Haaga Rhododendron', is a new, hardy, dwarf variety from the University of Helsinki, Finland. It produces dark pink flowers which contrast nicely with the dark green, coarse foliage. The Haaga will begin to bloom in May. This plant needs excellent drainage, mulching and a peat moss soil additive. Roots will rot in poorly drained soil. It will not do well in windy sites. This dense evergreen shrub is a highly valued landscape ornamental. The large groups of showy pink flowers appear on even young plants. The Haaga is a very effective accent plant.

The Wiegela 'Java Red', Weigela florida 'Java Red', is one of the oldest Wiegelas. It is a dwarf, only rarely exceeding four feet of height, making it at its biggest half the size of the majority of Weigelas. Due to its compact habit it is one of the least prone to ranginess when left unpruned, though some degree of ranginess seems inescapable even with a compact dwarf.This compact, mounding shrub displays attractive red buds that open to deep pink blooms. Billiard Spirea, spiraea x billiardi, has an unusual flower form, with stamens twice as long as the petals. The rose colored blossoms occur in narrow, dense plumes from June to August. It has a tendency to sucker that would make it useful for embankments. It grows 6 feet tall and 4 feet in width. Sparkling Carpet Spirea, spiraea japonica 'Sparkling Carpet' (PP13,665), is a fine-textured, small spreading shrub with lime-gold leaves. The leaves are bronze-red when young, then turn mahogany-red in fall. It looks like a tiny version of 'Gold Flame'Ö and produces few pink flowers in summer. No pruning is required.
