The Diana Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus syriacus Diana, is an upright, deciduous shrub that is a vigorous, erect, multi-stemmed shrub that typically grows 8-12' tall. This shrub may also be trained as a single trunk tree or espalier. Leaves are diamond-shaped, dark green, slightly palmate and toothed. 'Diana' bears whiteflowers with yellow stems from late summer until mid-fall. This plant really requires no pruning, unless you need to remove a dead or damaged branch. Long, early-summer to fall bloom period. This cultivar is a sterile triploid that produces very few if any seed pods. Excellent flowering shrub that may be massed, planted in groups or used as a specimen. Very tolerant of summer heat and humidity. Larger flowers may be obtained by pruning back hard to 2-3 buds in early spring. Otherwise, prune to shape.

The Spirea 'Tor', Spiraea betuliflia 'Tor', is a compact spirea reaching a height and width of 2-3 ft. Its tiny white flower clusters are set against a backdrop of deep green leaves that are almost iridescent in the summer. Foliage turns a deep, purplish-red in the fall. The flowers are attractive to butterflies. Light shearing will encourage repeat bloom. Tor blooms on new wood, so pruning in late winter or early spring is recommended. Because of its small size and excellent attributes, Tor spirea makes a great foundation shrub.

The Spiraea Snow Storm, 'Spiraea m. 'Snow Storm', a Proven Winners selection, will provide your garden or border with a 'snow storm' in April. White flowers will cover this plant in April and May. The summer foliage is cool, bluish green and the fall color is a blazing orange-red. This shrub is easy to grow and is low maintenance.

The Frobeli Spirea, Spiraea x bumalda, has new foliage that is purplish with bright pink to red early summer flowers. Vigorous grower with bright purplish-pink flowers in June-July. It has purplish tips on the foliage in spring. Leaves turn purple in fall for a striking color display. They will thrive in most locations. It is an upright, rounded shurb that is excellent as a small hedge, and when not in bloom, it is still an attractive neat plant.

The Spiraea 'Little Princess'Ö, Spiraea japonica, is easily grown in average, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It tolerates a wide range of soils. Prune in late winter to early spring. '£Little Princess'¥ Spiraea cultivar is a dense, upright, compact, mounded deciduous shrub which typically grows to 2-4' tall with a similar spread. Profuse pink flowers in small corymbs cover the arching stems of this plant in late spring. Flowers and leaves all appear on the same side of the arching branches. Flowers are attractive to butterflies. Narrow, dark blue-green foliage. It has no serious insect or disease problems, and is effective in borders, cottage gardens, foundation plantings, or hedges

The Snowmound Spirea, Spiraea nipponica, is an excellent dwarf shrub, with dense dark green foliage and masses of pure white flowers in May. Great for use as a foundation plant, in the shrub border or in a garden situation. Prune in the early spring before growth starts if shaping is needed and then again after the flowers are done blooming. This deciduous shrub prefers full sun to partial shade. It does best in well-drained soil with moderate to high levels of moisture. Prune older stems to the ground to thin and rejuvenate.

The Compact American Cranberrybush, Viburnum trilobum 'Alfredo', is native, hardy plant and has edible red fruits in fall, which are great for making jellies (and of course, for birds, too). It has superb red orange fall color.This compact American Cranberrybush grows rounded and upright, to about 5 to 6 feet high.

The Red Prince Weigela, Weigela florida Red Prince, is a deciduous shrub with dark red flowers. It is a full sized plant with good hardiness. The red flowers hold late into the season. It grows best in full sun to partial sun. Foliage is deep, purple-tinted green and forms a compact mound, reaching 6' when mature. Prefers well-drained soil. The cultivar 'Red Prince' is an egg-shaped, upright shrub with mid-green leaves to 4-1/2 inches long. Red, bell-shaped flowers bloom in early summer and again in late summer. Flowers attract hummingbirds. Suitable for shrub and mixed border.

The Bursting Heart Burning bush, Euonymus americana 'Bursting Heart', is a unique shrub. In the spring and summer this shrub quietly takes the back seat to other seasonal color. However, in early fall, it draws curious looks with its unique display of fruit. Bumpy, raspberry-red pods hang on the ends of stems and split open to reveal small, smooth, red seeds. If you'll plant this shrub with some room to grow, it will delight you with its fullness and profusion of fall "hearts." The lower limbs can be removed up to 2' or so and ground covers (foam flower, green and gold, ginger, etc.) planted to carpet the ground beneath. Grows 4-6'. Native.

The Coral Red Dogwood, Cornus alba 'Sibirica', has stunning bright red bark which adds color to the winter garden. It has been given an Award of Garden Merit (AM), which is for plants of outstanding excellence. Tolerant of a wide range of soils, it produces the brightest winter bark when planted in full sun. To keep the size of the plant in check and to encourage the most colorful bark, remove a third of the stems back to ground level each spring.

The Spectabilis Forsythis, Forsythia x intermedia, is a showy border Forsythia that transplants readily. It grows at a rapid rate and is long-lived. Tolerates a wide range of soil and light conditions, but prefers full sun. Allow plenty of room for plant to spread. Withstands city conditions. Profuse, yellow, spring flowers are followed by medium green summer foliage. `Spectabilis' (Showy Border Forsythia) is the most common forsythia. The profuse, yellow flowers of forsythia are considered by many to be the first sure sign of spring. Flowers will last for two or three weeks unless killed by cold. Often used to control erosion on steep slopes because tips of branches root naturally and plants spread easily. Suggested uses for this plant include border, specimen plant, and screen. Prune in spring after flowering so that buds for the next year can develop in the fall.
