Neon Flash Spirea, spiraea japonica 'Neon Flash', is a 3 foot by 3 foot compact plant that is a fast grower with "flashy" bright red flower clusters blooming throughout the summer season. The dark green summer foliage emerges with a purplish tinge, and then in fall becomes a dark burgundy. Spireas are among the easiest flowering shrubs to grow since they are tolerant of many soils except extremely wet. The plant also likes mulch and summer watering, along with full sun. Neon Flash has a dense mounding habit that is tidy and versatile, with high tolerance for snow damage. Incredible color in both foliage and flowers, this spirea deserves a place in any garden.

Tango Weigela, weigela florida 'Tango', has both a compact, bushy habit and fantastic, purple foliage which makes this variety a must for a limited landscape. The flowers, a beautiful red with a yellow throat, bloom 3 to 4 weeks in June. Tango Weigela performs best in full sun. This moderate grower reaches 2-3 feet in height and width. This compact weigela fits nicely into mixed shrub borders and at the back of perennial plantings. It even works well as a low hedge. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. For a tidy, neat appearance, shear to shape in early spring.

The Rhododendron Nova Zembla, 'Rhododendron 'Nova Zembla', is a dense-growing, small evergreen shrub that displays large trusses of flowers. The red flowers will appear in mid spring. The Nova Zembla is very effective as an accent plant. For best results, feed with an acid fertilizer after bloom and keep the roots cool with a thick layer of mulch. Rudy Haag Burning Bush, Euonymus alatus 'Rudy Haag', is a consistent pink-red fall color. Its excellent habit and form will make this a popular selection. The fall color can be spectacular! The small, yellowish green flowers that appear in May are not showy much like the small fruits that appear in the fall. This very compact, slow growing shrub performs best in full sun. This is grown in average, medium, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Rudy Haag is an adaptable shrub which tolerates a wide range of soils and full shade, but will not tolerate wet, poorly-drained soil. Since it has a strong, branching growth habit it can withstand heavy pruning. This versatile, dwarf shrub, with brilliant fall color, can be used as a hedge, screen, foundation or border plant. It has no disease or insect problems.

Winged Burning Bush, 'Euonymus alatus', is a beautiful rounded shrub with tiny yellow flowers in May-June and known best for its long lasting fiery red fall color. The inconspicuous flowers give way to paired or single reddish capsules that split to reveal orange fleshy seeds. (Four corky ridges appear along the length of young stems.) Corky wings on the branches provide additional winter interest. Winged Burning Bush is good for borders, accents and screens. It prefers sun to light shade. This shrub is widely planted by landscape professionals and homeowners for its fall color, dark green leaves and winged stems. It expands locally through vegetative reproduction and to new areas through bird dispersal of seeds. Shrubs can be repeatedly cut to the ground to control re-sprouts.

It needs sun to partial shade; prefers moist, well-drained soil but tolerates a range of soil conditions. It is rapid growing and has showy, green and white variegated leaves that last till fall. Compact PeeGee Hydrangea, Hydrangea paniculata 'Compact', is a compact shrub that has large, white, cone-shaped flowers blooming in late summer that mature to a pinkish-bronze towards autumn.
